How Long is the Temporary Drivers License Valid For ?
You can apply with either your International Driving Permit (IDP) or your National Driver’s License:
- International Driving Permit (IDP): Valid for 12 months.
- National Driver’s License: Valid for 3 months.
Important: For extended validity (12 months), apply with an IDP.

How Long Does the Application Process Take?
The application process for a temporary driving permit can be completed within 24 hours. For emergency applications, we can process it within an hour, ensuring you're ready to drive.
If you choose delivery, your permit will be sent to the provided address. It takes around 3–4 working days to receive your permit.

How much does the temporary permit cost?
The temporary driving permit issued by AA Ceylon through RENTO costs 45 USD without delivery. If you choose delivery to a Sri Lankan address, the total cost is 46.5 USD.

What Documents Do I Need to Apply?
You will need the following colored pictures:
- Passport.
- Front of your international/national driver’s license.
- Back of your international/national driver’s license.
- (For IDP) A picture showing the vehicle or bike classes.
- A passport-sized photo of yourself.
Tip: Apply with your IDP for longer validity (12 months).

What Is the Earliest I Can Apply?
You can apply for a temporary driving permit as early as you want but please note that your permit will only be sent to process 5-7 days before your permit start date.

Am I Allowed to Drive in Sri Lanka Without a Temporary Permit from AA Ceylon?
It is illegal to drive a motor vehicle without a temporary driving permit that has been issued by AA Ceylon, RENTO provides these Permits from AA Ceylon to its customers to prevent them from getting fined or worse.

What Are the Terms and Conditions for Delivery?
RENTO only delivers your temporary driving permit within Sri Lanka, when filling up the delivery details on the application form please make sure to provide a Sri Lankan contact number as the our delivery driver will contact you when he/she is delivering your temporary driving permit. If you do not have a Sri Lankan you can also give the contact number for the place you will be staying at during your time in Sri Lanka or alternatively your rental car provider.

What Are the Terms and Conditions for Pickup?
You will have to visit the AA Ceylon head office which is located HERE Please note that the offices are open from 8am to 4:30pm on weekdays and closed on weekends. When going to collect your temporary driving permit, please make sure to take some sort of identification with you.

What Happens If I Lose My Temporary Driving Permit?
If you happen to lose or destroy your temporary driving permit, you will have to re apply for your temporary permit via RENTO again at the same cost as the previous time.

Does RENTO Convert Sri Lankan Driver’s Licenses into International Driving Permits?
Unfortunately for the moment RENTO only converts foreign drivers licenses into temporary permits to be able to drive in Sri Lanka.

How can i apply for a temporary driving permit through RENTO?
You will first have to register yourself on the RENTO website, if you haven’t already registered yet please click here to get registered on RENTO. Once you have registered yourself on our website you will be able to create a new application by logging into your account.

Can I apply with my international or national drivers license?
You can apply with either your international or national drivers license, the cost will not change. If you decide to apply with your international drivers license, your temporary driving permit will be valid for a period of 12 months (1 year). If you apply with a national driver’s license your temporary driving permit will be valid for 3 months.

What Types of Vehicles Can I Drive in Sri Lanka Based on My License Category?
- Category AM, A1: Scooters (Mopeds) only.
- Category A: All motorcycles (no engine restrictions).
- Category B: Cars, small vans, and three-wheelers.
